Starting the new school year – What to expect and tips for a smooth transition

Starting the new school year can arouse many feelings, whether your child is starting school for the very first time, changing to a different school or returning to school after a long summer break.

You can expect your child to be excited, anxious, hesitant and eager … the full range of emotions all mixed together!!

Here are some tips to get the new school year of to a smooth start:

  1. Talk to your child about going to or back to school BEFORE the first day – let them know this will be happening before it happens.
  2. Involve your child in preparing for the first day of school as much as age appropriate. Perhaps they can help pick out a new school bag or water bottle, prepare their school clothes or uniform that they will wear on the first day, and pack their bag the night before with anything they need to bring to school.
  3. Be positive about the first day of school even if your child is expressing anxiety or anger or sadness. Your child will be looking to you for reassurance so exude positivity and enthusiasm.
  4. If your school allows it, arrive early so you can have some time at the playground with your child before they have to head to class.
  5. Say goodbye to your child with a smile and a hug or kiss or wave… keep the goodbye short and sweet!

Quality early years settings will have teachers who are well aware of the mix of emotions and reactions that come with the start of a new school year, so they will be there to support your child through their settling in process.

Have a great first day of school, followed by many more throughout the year!
