The first week at school, whether it is starting school the first time, or returning after the long summer break can be a big adjustment for both children and parents.
This is a time of new routines, new social interactions, and new learning experiences. It can also be a period of emotional adjustment for both the child and the parent, particularly if it is the first school experience, with potential anxieties about separation and adjusting to a new environment.
Whether your child is coming to school for the first time, or returning to school you can expect there will be some big emotions, as your child adjusts to the new school year.
Here are some practical tips to make the start of the new school year a positive experience for your child and you!
- Expect some separation anxiety and reassure your child that you will see them at the end of the school day.
- Keep a consistent routine – do not arrive at school late, do not pick up late, and do not miss school unless absolutely necessary.
- Build confidence in the teacher by showing and telling your child that you are confident in their teacher.
- Talk about the school routine with your child to help them understand what to expect each day.
- Be positive no matter what! Tears and tantrums may occur, but maintain a positive attitude and remind your child of the positive things that will happen at school.
- And finally – communicate with your teacher – if you have any questions or concerns about how your child is settling into the school year, the best person to talk to is your teacher!
